Hollywood isn’t exactly known for its sensitivity to different cultures. It’s getting better, for the most part, but we’re talking about a business that emboldened John Wayne to try to rush the stage when Sacheen Littlefeather declined the Oscar on behalf of Marlon Brando in protest of the industry’s treatment of indigenous people, as well as the same one that, you know, necessitated such a protest. It’s also probably what led “Littlefeather” to fabricate her indigenous heritage. It’s problematic all the way down.
As a result, when you’re a person who’s rarely depicted on-screen, you learn to let shit go. You might not like it, but you know those jackholes aren’t going to do much more than a Wikipedia skim before they piss on your culture. But sometimes, man, they just go too far. That’s why user RedN0va asked r/AskReddit, “What’s the worst depiction of your culture or nationality you’ve seen in a film or TV (show) or game?”
