Who doesn’t love a big, loud, family picnic at the park?

We’ll tell you who–the park rangers. That is probably one of their least favorite parts of working as a park ranger.

Many families, especially big ones with lots of aunts, uncles, cousins, and children, love the opportunity to arrange a big family reunion at a park. Someone brings a grill, another gets the drinks, Grandma makes her special dish, and everyone is thrilled. Hosting this party at a park means that no one has to volunteer their house, the kids have lots of room to run around and play, and it’s generally an easy cleanup by the end of the day. Sounds perfect, right?

While it might be perfect for the family, those who work at the park might be less thrilled about this situation. Even though having picnics is one of the main purposes of a park, when big families come to visit, it can lead to unpleasant confrontations with the people who try to ensure everyone follows the park’s rules. 

If you’ve ever been to a park, then you are probably familiar with a few rules, such as no loud music, no littering, and no staying at the park after closing hours. On paper, these rules don’t sound too difficult to follow, and the park rangers are there to ensure that. But if you are part of a big, loud family that may or may not possess some form of entitlement, don’t be surprised if you end up facing an unhappy park ranger who just wants you to leave.

When the park ranger in the story below told the big family in the park that closing time is in 30-minutes, they didn’t think they would be met with pushback. After all, the family was informed of the closing time when they decided to rent the picnic area for the party. But alas, the party planner claimed they were not told when they would have to leave, and demanded more time so they could finish eating their food.

Sticking to the rules, the park ranger insisted that the family move their party elsewhere after the 30 minutes were up. When they returned to see if the family complied, they were not surprised to find them still having their picnic, looking nowhere near ready to clear out.
