The Rundle Ruins are the striking sandstone remnants of Calgary’s second general hospital, located in what is now Victoria Park near the Calgary Stampede grounds. Built in 1894 this building was a significant early example of large-scale sandstone construction in the city.
The hospital served Calgary for decades, eventually becoming an isolation hospital and then a seniors’ residence until the early 1970s. Despite passionate efforts by local preservationists, the building was largely demolished in 1973. However, rather than completely removing it, sections were preserved and integrated into a public park in 1974.
Today, the Rundle Ruins stand as a popular and unique historical landmark, offering a glimpse into Calgary’s past, particularly its “Sandstone Era,” and are a favored spot for photographers.
